The innate human instinct to connect with nature and other living beings.
About the project
The Biophiles is an artistic initiative that exists through the mediums of photography, text, and video weaved into imaginary travel journals.
Working as an adventurous artistic duo, we set a destination: we propose a theme for each journal. We then begin the journey, an expedition into places that inspire us, always with nature as the subject. Through play and experimentation, we each respond to the theme and develop the photographic body of work and we tie it all up with storytelling. One project, two perceptions.
Through these narratives, we aim to illuminate the beauty of our planet, fostering a deep connection with nature and wonder within you, our fellow biophiles.
The prints you can purchase through this website are the tangible result of this project. Each journal is presented as a collection with limited availability until the following journal replaces it. With each purchase, you will contribute to fund the following project.
Thank you in advance for being our patron :)
North and South, Sea and Soil. The Biophiles is the result of a friendship that quietly sprouted during brunches, art exhibitions and trips around the globe. Our creativity comes from our love for nature, which we’ve both nurtured since our early childhood memories in Spain. We understand the beauty of the natural world as a spiritual element that brings connection and fulfilment to our lives. Our work is a continuous exploration of the senses, a conversation between the infinity of the sea and all the wonders rooted on Earth.
We firmly believe in beauty as a joyful language that can promote a positive impact on society. We trust that our visual poetry will bring a more empathetic approach to every living being as we firmly believe, we all are nature.
Emma & Berta
About us
~ Berta De La Rosa ~
Berta is a Spanish-born interdisciplinary artist who lives and works between London and Seville. She holds a BA degree in Fine Arts and a MA in Photography from the Central Saint Martins School of Arts. Her work as a visual artist advocates the protection of nature and traditions, specially the ones rooted in the figure of the olive tree. Berta’s playful approach to photography integrates a wide variety of techniques and materials which articulate the stories in a genuine way. Her installations outline the importance of preserving handcraft processes involved in agriculture to promote a sustainable use of the land and a harmonious interaction with nature.
* Emma Vázquez Costa *
Emma is a Spanish artist and designer based in London, where she studied MA Photography at Central Saint Martins (and had the luck to meet Berta) and currently works as Head of Creative for a tech scale-up.
Her photographic practice has developed from her perspective as a migrant, attempting to grasp what differentiates the place she calls home from anywhere else in the world, exploring cultural idiosyncrasies, storytelling and the natural landscape. She is currently expanding her work within street photography and experimenting with video as a medium.
